Controlling Pain

Brenda Stutzman, RN - Director, Orthopaedics/Neurosurgery/Joint Center, says that one of the key components of the coordinated program is a focus on controlling pain. “That’s so important. Research has shown that when patients can relax after surgery and have their pain at an acceptable and manageable level, they typically heal faster and better. That’s our goal.”
Something that may surprise you is that activity is another key component of the program. Jeff Weissert, Physical Therapy Director at Saint Elizabeth, says that we have learned that walking, is important for the best recovery for almost all patients. “Sometimes a physician will want their patient to walk six times-a-day. Our job is to help motivate the patient so they will walk or do the activity their doctor prescribes.”
