Parish Nurse Health Ministry Program

A Partnership of Faith and Healing

Parish Nurse Letter - Spring 2009

More than 300 fully-trained women and men of Protestant or Catholic faith are connecting with their community through a unique, inclusive and exciting program---called Parish Nursing or Faith Community Nursing---that combines faith and healing.

People, mostly nurses, from various churches, parishes and congregations in and around Lincoln receive extensive training in areas such as:
  • Spiritual Wellness
  • Holistic Health and Wellness
  • Psychological Integration
  • Family Health
  • Ethics
  • Liability
  • Community Resources

Reaching Out

Once trained, the Parish Nurse then reaches out to members of their faith community. They may contact those who are homebound or hospitalized. They often step in during times of crisis or celebration, offering presence or prayer. Sometimes they provide blood pressure screening between church services or provide health education materials and information at the church. They will also assist church members in accessing appropriate levels of health care. They have also stepped in to help organizations such as the American Heart Association distribute materials or dispense information on various programs or generally, on healthy living.

Focus

This healing ministry focuses on the whole person. The Parish Nurse does not replace the patient's need for routine physical check-ups and necessary medical or hospital care. Rather, this program enhances the patients' well-being by helping them become a partner in the management of their health care through health education, spiritual caring, and emotional support.
