Car Seats

Keeping baby safe

It's exciting to get shop for an expected baby.  But while some items are fun to have, others are necessities for your baby's safety.  Of priority should be an approved car seat!
There are two types of seats available to newborns: the infant seat and the convertible seat.

Infant Seats are for babies from birth to 1-year-old and weighing 20 pounds.  When you put your baby's car seat in the car, it should face the rear of the car.

Many infant-only seats are also designed for use also in the home. They are easy to handle and are helpful in carrying your sleeping baby from the car into the house.  Many attach to a base that stays properly secured in your car.  It is important not to confuse home-use infant seats with infant-only car seats.

Convertible seats are for babies from birth to up to 20-32 pounds, are rear-facing and some up can be used up to 40 pounds and be forward-facing.

These seats can be used longer, so you won’t need a booster seat later. However, these seats are larger, and usually more difficult to carry your baby in. These seats sit a little higher than infant-only seats. Your child may even be able to see out the window as they get older---and help keep your child entertained as you travel.

  • Make sure it is a car seat that you will use every time you transport your baby in a vehicle.

Mom and baby safety: Pregnant women and their unborn babies are at risk for complications from injuries from motor vehicle crashes.  It is very important that mom wear a seat belt at all times.  But, the seat belt must be positioned properly to also provide safety for the baby.

Pregnancy Precautions with Seat Belts:
  • Use both a lap and a shoulder belt.
  • Place the lap belt low, underneath your abdomen.  It should lay across your thighs-not across your abdomen.
  • Wear the shoulder over your shoulder, never under your arm.  If the shoulder strap is height-adjustable, position it to fit snugly but not rub into your neck.

Begin a life-long habit for your family and buckle up!
