Definitions and Explanations
At Saint Elizabeth Regional Medical Center and at our affiliated clinics, nurses play a vital role in completing our continuum of care to the patients we serve. The following clinical definitions and explanations are designed to help you better understand those positions.

A HOUSE SUPERVISOR on the 3-11 and 11-7 shift, weekends and holidays assumes administrative responsibility for fulfilling approved standards and quality nursing service for all nursing areas in the health center during his/her specified shift.

The DIRECTOR of each nursing unit assumes supervisory responsibility for planning, leading, directing and assisting team members in providing comprehensive nursing care to meet the needs of patients.

Assignment of patient care is made by the AREA COORDINATOR/TEAM LEADER/CHARGE NURSE. Patient care assignments are based on the patient’s acuity level, qualifications of personnel, staff available and infection prevention and control.

CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANTS (CNAs) assist the nursing staff with patient care assignments. All CNA staff have met the requirements of the certified nursing assistant course as included in Nebraska Nursing Assistant Registry and work under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse.

MONITOR TECHS fulfill are trained in ECG pattern and arrhythmia recognition. This position is found in Critical Care.

UNIT SECRETARY provides support for departmental operations related to clerical functions and coordinates communication for nursing staff. The Unit secretary work under the supervisor of the team coordinator and reports to the unit director.

The CASE MANAGER is assigned to a group of hospital patients and is responsible for case management, utilization management and discharge planning. Each inpatient is assigned to a Case Manager when they are admitted. The Case Manager identifies special needs and coordinates services or equipment the patient might need after his or her hospital stay. He/she ensures that the delivery of care is smooth and that communication is coordinated between the healthcare providers. The Case Manager works with the patient’s insurance provider for benefit coverage.

EDUCATIONAL SERVICES coordinates orientation for all nursing personnel. The department coordinates inservices and staff development programs to assure good technical and professional skills. Outside continuing education opportunities are made available to members of the staff.

Resource materials as appropriate are maintained on the nursing units. A complete MEDICAL LIBRARY that includes reference books, current periodicals, on-line computer searches and audiovisual aides is available to the nursing staff. It is staffed by a Medical Librarian.

INTERDISCIPLINARY COLLABORATION-NURSING is well represented on a range of interdisciplinary committees within the organization, including patient education, pain management, professional nurse practice council, safety council.

The INFECTION CONTROL COORDINATOR is a registered nurse who assists the chairperson of Infection Control Committee in the overall implementation of the Infection Control Program. The Infection Control Coordinator is a resource for staff related to isolation, infection control practices/policies, education and orientation, as well as, consultation related to the purchasing of equipment and supplies that require sterilization, disinfection and decontamination. This person also monitors infection rates and nosocomial infections and assists with the investigation of significant changes.

The SAFETY COORDINATOR is a registered nurse who assists in the overall implementation of the Safety Program. The Safety Coordinator is a resource for staff related to providing a safe environment, including hazardous materials and wastes, sharps safety, emergency preparedness, worker safety standards and monitoring, safety education and orientation, and consultation related to the purchase of safe products. This person serves on the Safety Council and coordinates the Hazardous Materials, Emergency Preparedness, and Worker Safety Subcommittees, and the Safety Surveillance and Needle Safety teams, and monitors safety.
