Safe Swallowing Strategies
Swallowing strategies are important for the patient to use when an abnormal swallow puts them at risk for aspiration.  The Speech pathologist instructs the patient with strategies that will help them be as safe as possible.  No one should attempt these strategies without instruction or supervision by a Speech pathologist or medical personnel who have been instructed by the Speech Pathologist.

Strategies include:
  • Chin tuck
  • Small bites/sips of foods or liquids
  • Swallowing numerous times after each bite
  • Texture modification
  • Swallowing exercises
  • Swallowing strengthening
  • Swallowing treatment
