PLANNING FOR YOUR BABY’S SAFETY
Selecting baby’s crib is critical to baby’s safety.
Here is a checklist:
Whether you are purchasing a new crib, a used crib or borrowing one from a family
member or friend, keep these tips in mind:
1. The crib slats must be 2 3/8 inches apart, or closer.
2. Use a firm mattress that fits snugly in the frame of the crib. There should be only one fingers width between the mattress and the frame.
3. Make sure that any paint on the crib is lead free.
4. There should not be any cutouts in the head or footboard.
5. If the crib has any corner posts, unscrew them or cut them off. Loose clothing can become caught and cause strangulation. (Top edges should be the same height, so that baby’s head doesn’t get caught.
6. Make sure that the crib you use is able to have the side rails raise up and lock into position, and that the frame can be moved to the lowest position as your baby grows.
7. When choosing a site for your crib, make sure it is away from blind and drapery cords and windows.
8. Never use a plastic bag or dry cleaning bag to cover the mattress in the crib. Your baby can suffocate on even a small piece of plastic.
9. Do not use pillows/large stuffed animals in the crib.
10. Bumper pads are helpful (and colorful) for baby when they are little, but
be sure to remove them from the crib, once your baby starts to pull his/herself
up.
