Auditory Brainstem Response (ABR)
This test is performed to assess the functioning of the auditory pathway from the ear to the brain. It can also be used to measure the softest sound the ear will respond to. Measurements are recorded through electrodes placed on the forehead and sometimes the earlobes. A series of clicks are presented through earplugs (inserts). A computer analyzes the readings from the electrodes. The test is painless and takes approximately 1hour.
Electrocochleography (ECochG)
This is a test to assess part of your balance system. The preparation for this test is similar to an ABR. An ECochG takes approximately 1 hour if done as a separate test from the ABR.
Electronystagmography (ENG)
When dizziness occurs, a measurable sign of what happens is called nystagmus. Nystagmus is an involuntary eye movement. By measuring the eye movement, we can assess portions of the balance system. This measurement is done by placing electrodes around the eyes and recording the eye movements. This test takes approximately 1-1½hours.
Videonystagmography (VNG)
This test is the same as an ENG except goggles that videotape eye movements are used instead of electrodes.
Otoacoustic Emissions (OAE)
OAEs measure the function and structural integrity of the organ of hearing (inner ear). An earplug is placed in the ear, and a series of tones are presented. This test does not require a response from the patient. Testing takes approximately 15 minutes.
Posturography
Posturography is a test to assess your body’s natural ability to maintain balance. It assesses your eyes, inner ear and muscles/joints and how they work to keep you balanced. For this test you will stand (shoes removed, please wear socks) on a platform that may move during different parts of the test. You will be secured with a harness to prevent you from falling if you lose your balance. This test will take approximately 30 minutes.
You are scheduled for a test of your balance system. The following instructions need to be followed to ensure accurate results.
Do not take any of the following medications 48 hours before your appointment:
- Sleeping pills
- Tranquilizers/Antidepressants
- Antihistamines (Cold/Allergy pills)
- Barbiturates

- Sedatives
- Alcoholic Beverages
- Muscle Relaxants
Be sure to check with the prescribing physician before you stop any of the above medications if you are required to take them on a daily basis.
Do not have any caffeine 24 hours before the test. Coffee, tea, chocolate, etc.
