To help you make the best decision regarding hearing aids we will let you
listen to a pair of digital hearing aids during a personal demonstration.
Digital hearing aids have finally arrived. Up until a couple of years ago we could still buy the old analog technology in our hearing aids. We can now proudly say that the analog hearing aid has gone the way of the eight track tape player.
This means that all hearing aids sold today by reputable businesses are digital. The term “digital” means very little today. It’s what we do with the “digital” technology that makes all the difference. No matter what hype you may hear there are only four basic things that digital hearing aids do.
1. Sound Processing: This is the basic function of a hearing aid. The sound is modified and amplified to make speech clearer to the damaged ear. Current leading sound processing is significantly better than in the past. One critical element in sound processing is harmonic distortion. Any time we process sound electronically we introduce some level of distortion to the sound. This is the reason why we can tell the difference between live acoustic (unamplified) and a recording. Up until about a year ago even the best hearing aids had a three to five percent total harmonic distortion of the signal. Today’s best hearing aids produce about a half a percent!
2. Noise Suppression: The processors in the best hearing aids can identify steady state background sounds like fans, machinery, road noise of the hubbub of a crowd. The noise is then turned down without effecting speech. This is a big deal! It is important to remember, we are not trying to control noise. We are trying to enhance speech intelligibility.
3. Directional Microphones: This technology uses two microphones to cut out sounds that come from the back and sides. This can be very useful in restaurants, movies, church or any other situation when you only care to hear what is in front of you.
4. Feedback Control: Feedback is that nasty whistling sound hearing aids can make. Feedback makes hearing more difficult and is annoying to everyone. It is usually caused by too much amplification of high pitched sound. New computer algorithms can reduce or even eliminate this common problem.
If you talk to people who have had older hearing aids and listen to their complaints, you will see that we now have an answer for most of them. Even with all the improvements, hearing aids are not perfect. That’s why we still call them hearing aids and not hearing cures. All in all these hearing aids are far superior to what we’ve had in the past.
