Common Sense Parenting is a national, skills-based curriculum designed by Boys Town that utilizes principles proven through research to help parents.

Throughout the six weeks, parents will discover new techniques through participation in discussion, review of video clips and role playing. These learning opportunities will be offered in a positive environment so that parents can develop these skills and recognize the benefits before implementing in their own home. The small group size, led by a Boys Town trained instructor, provides the perfect opportunity to ask questions and individualize the strategies to meet your family’s needs.

Registration fee includes the Common Sense Parenting book, certificate, wallet cards and workbook. The book is the newly revised 3rd Edition and includes great resource information, charts, answers to common parenting questions and special interest topics such as computer use, school bullying and peer pressure.

Common Sense Parenting is a wonderful opportunity for you to learn specific guidelines to use in raising your children and promote healthy family life. We offer two different sessions to choose from: Toddlers and Preschool or School-Age Children. 

Cost: $95 per couple

Toddlers and Preschool Children
Help your toddler or preschooler learn limits and how to effectively deal with their feelings. Role play, video and discussion will help you:

• Learn to set reasonable expectations based on your child's age and abilities 
• Learn how "show and tell"  can be used to prevent problems and correct misbehavior
• Learn to use praise to help your child choose the right behavior
• Develop a plan to help you stay calm
• Provide consistent consequences so that your child learns what you expect of them 
• Celebrate special occasions and everyday successes as cherished family traditions

School-Age Children
This curriculum is designed for school-age children from 6-16 years and can be applied to every family. In this class, parents learn tools to minimize problems that disrupt family life helping parents raise responsible, caring children. Specific topics include:

• How to improve family relationships and communication,
• How to prevent behavior problems,
• The importance of teaching through positive discipline,
• How to utilize consequences to improve behavior,
• How to help kids develop self-control through limits and
• How to help children learn to set goals, problem solve and develop social skills.
